Single-Layer vs Double-Layer Motorcycle Gear - What's the difference?

You've probably heard of the term Kevlar, and how it should be in every motorcycle garment ever.

Single-layer typically refers to motorcycle riding pants that have a single layer of fabric, as opposed to pants with multiple layers or liners. The outside layer tends to be the protective or abrasion resistant layer, making it a lighter and cooler garment to wear. This is especially important if you plan on riding in warmer weather or live in a hot or humid climate. There are many aspects of safety, and staying cool enough to retain your concentration on the road is essential!

Single-layer motorcycle pants are designed to be lightweight and breathable while still providing essential protection for riders. The material used in these pants is usually a durable and abrasion-resistant fabric, such as reinforced textiles. These textiles usually have another material woven into it such as Armalith, Dyneema, or UHMWPE fabric. The single-layer design aims to offer comfort and flexibility without compromising safety.

Some of our most popular single-layer items include the MotoGirl Ellie Jeans and the Pando Moto Shell UH 03 Shirt.

Double-layer motorcycle gear contains a protective layer that is separate from the external layer. In an accident, the outside layer may tear, but the inside layer (usually made with aramid fibre such as Kevlar) is designed to take most of the abrasion. Additionally, the inclusion of impact protection in the inner layers enhances rider safety in case of accidents.

Some of our most popular double-layer products include the MotoGirl Sherrie Leggings, and MotoGirl Lara Cargos.

Kevlar is a well-known fabric that is often used in the construction of motorcycle gear.

While Kevlar is an important material in motorcycle gear, it is often used in conjunction with other materials such as leather or high-denier textiles to create a well-rounded, protective garment.

The combination of materials ensures that the gear not only offers abrasion resistance but also addresses other factors such as impact protection, weather resistance, and comfort.

However, Kevlar can make motorcycle gear thick and heavy, and technology in the motorcycle industry is catching up to provide just as much abrasion resistance while providing other added benefits, too.

The level of protection can vary based on the specific materials and construction used in the single-layer motorcycle gear. Some riders may prefer single-layer garments for warmer weather or higher flexibility, while others prefer the thicker feeling of double-layer garments.

Always check the specifications and safety features of motorcycle gear to ensure it meets your specific needs and riding conditions.
