How to Choose the Right Motorcycle Riding Gear

How to Choose the Right Motorcycle Riding Gear

Ever felt overwhelmed trying to pick motorcycle gear that's safe, stylish, and actually comfortable?

Trust me, you're not alone! As a rider and the owner of Peak Moto Gear, I've chatted with plenty of motorcyclists especially women who struggle to find gear that's protective but doesn't compromise on style or comfort. After years of riding and talking gear every single day, here's what I've learned about choosing the right motorcycle riding gear that actually suits your lifestyle.

Protection Isn’t Optional, It’s Essential

I’ll start by sharing a personal story. A friend’s son recently took a minor spill at about 40 km/h wearing a helmet, jacket, and gloves. Everything looked good except for his regular denim jeans, which shredded instantly. A pair of quality armoured pants would’ve prevented those painful grazes. It reinforced why I always advocate wearing proper gear even on short trips or casual rides.

Choosing the right gear can literally be the difference between walking away unharmed or dealing with serious injury. Here's an insightful article that explains why armour is a non-negotiable part of riding.

We’ve got a fantastic selection of motorcycle protective gear designed specifically to keep you safe.

Start from the Top with Helmets

Your head's pretty important, right? Your helmet is your most vital piece of gear. Always choose full-face helmets for maximum protection. Open-face helmets might look cool, but they simply don't provide the same safety level.

Helmet fit matters hugely. It should feel snug but comfortable. Spend time trying on different helmets brands like AGV, which we stock, provide a great mix of comfort, style, and protection.

Speaking of which, check out our range of agv motorcycle helmets that combine safety and great design.

Gloves and Boots Keep You Riding Longer

Don't underestimate gloves and boots. Ever had a rock or insect hit your knuckle at highway speed? Ouch. Proper gloves protect your hands, and the same goes for boots. Boots should be sturdy, comfortable, and cover your ankles completely. Riding boots significantly lower your chance of injury in a spill. Here's a practical guide that dives deeper into glove and boot safety.

Personally, I'm a big fan of boots designed specifically for women riders. They're cut differently and offer a better fit because let’s face it, our bodies aren’t the same as men’s. Check out our women's motorcycle boots to find your ideal pair.

Jackets and Pants: Comfort Means You’ll Actually Wear Them

If your gear is uncomfortable, guess what? You won’t wear it. Finding the right jacket and pants that are breathable, weather-appropriate, and comfortable is crucial. Ventilated jackets are amazing in hot Aussie summers, while insulated and waterproof gear makes winter rides enjoyable instead of miserable.

I love our range of women's motorcycle jackets. They look great, feel amazing, and have proper safety ratings. I've found that the best jacket is one you genuinely love wearing because it looks good and feels good.

Don't forget pants! Armoured pants are essential. No shortcuts here investing in high-quality motorcycle pants like the ones in our women's motorcycle pants collection is crucial.

Armour Isn’t Just for Racing

Sometimes people assume armour in jackets and pants is just for professional racers. Not true! Everyday commuting is just as risky, sometimes even more so due to unpredictable city traffic. The reality is, accidents happen at any speed.

For more clarity, here's a recent study proving the effectiveness of armour in everyday riding gear.

Understanding Safety Ratings Makes a Huge Difference

I realise gear safety ratings can seem confusing. CE ratings indicate that gear meets European safety standards for impact protection and abrasion resistance. Understanding these ratings helps you make informed decisions.

I've written a handy article explaining this: understanding and choosing CE-rated motorcycle gear.

New Gear is Always Safer than Pre-Loved

I know buying new gear can seem costly, but safety-wise, it's absolutely worth it. You never truly know the history of second-hand gear. Helmets, in particular, should always be purchased new. Check out my detailed view on this in why investing in new motorcycle gear is smarter in the long run.

Still Feeling Overwhelmed?

It's completely normal. Gear is an investment in your safety and riding enjoyment. If you're unsure or just need someone to chat with, please feel free to reach out to me. I'm always here to help make your riding safer, more comfortable, and stylish.

See you out there!
